CalCOFI has been developing OceanView, a community science application to augment CalCOFI observations off the coast of California
The OceanView app is designed to inspire users to actively participate in ocean observing and marine research, and to contribute to marine conservation efforts. The primary goals of the application are to enhance existing long-term marine life observations, such as the CalCOFI observations, along the coast of California by involving local community members in the collection of valuable marine species data.
The OceanView application is a participatory citizen science application that allows recreational ocean users to upload detailed information on marine species they caught or observed, including the image of the organism, the species name, time, and location. The data collected will be used to support research and management off the coast of California and users of the OceanView app become active participants in the stewardship of California’s coastal ecosystems, contributing to the broader mission of understanding and preserving our oceans.
